Thanks for a fantastic fall meeting, it was great to have you here!
2023 fall annual meeting October 18th in Beautiful Canon City!!!
Rangeland Soil Health
Join us as we explore how grazing, soil microbiology, insects, and plant community changes affect rangeland soil health. Dixie Crowe, NRCS Rangeland Management Specialist and CSSRM President-Elect, will lead our workshop and field investigations.
We'll start our day at the beautiful Abbey Event Center in Canon City discussing rangeland soil topics. What is soil health in rangelands? What kinds of clues can we find on rangelands that tell us the status of soil health? Once we find the clues, what can we do with that information? How can we change soil by changing management practices? Then enjoy a catered lunch, included in your ticket price.
In the afternoon we'll explore local rangeland soils looking for clues we identified in the morning session and deepening our discussion on changes we can make to management practices to change our rangeland soils. Register here!

Dixie Crowe is a NRCS Rangeland Management Specialist in SE Colorado. Her six county service area falls into Major Land Resource Area (MLRA) 48, Southern Rocky Mountains, which requires digging a lot of soil pits, texturing soils, describing soil pits, and performing soil elements that are part of the 17 indicators of Rangeland Health. She works with a variety of livestock producers to create conservation plans to improve their operations.
Dixie co-teaches the Soil and Water Conservation course at Camp Rocky, a week-long summer course for high school students, sponsored by the Colorado Association of Conservation Districts. Dixie has a B.S. in Equine Sciences and a Master's of Natural Resource Stewardship in Rangeland Ecology, both from Colorado State University. As a graduate student at CSU she practiced with the soil judging team as a non-competing member for two years. She was part of the student, faculty, professional soil scientist teams that did the soil surveys in Dinosaur National Monument in 2017 and 2018 to prepare for their grazing management plan. She also spent three years as a graduate research associate doing PhD research in soil science in a three-crop rotation farming study using conventional tillage, no-tillage, full irrigation, 75% of full irrigation and fall cover cropping with livestock integration to improve soil health at the University of Wyoming before coming to NRCS in 2021.
